Robert Clark Biography

(1920-1997)

Clark’s stunning paintings are found in prominent collections in the United States and abroad. Among the notable collectors of Clark’s art include various celebrities Tom Selleck, Johnny Carson, and Burt Reynolds.

Zantman Art Galleries has had the distinction of exhibiting Clark’s paintings since the gallery was established in 1959.  Exquisite detail, subtle illumination, and the perfection of meticulously fine paint strokes are essential qualities of Clark’s method and greatness.  As with the great Masters, Clark chose egg tempera as his luminous and demanding medium of choice.  Clark’s magnificent renditions of the rural American scene have been favorably compared to the paintings of Andrew Wyeth, one of the greatest American artists of the 20th century.

Born in Minnesota in 1920, Clark received his formal art training at the Walker Art School and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He came to California in 1948 where he became a staff member of the Long Beach Museum of Art and later a staff artist at the Los Angeles County Museum.  Clark’s decision to become an independent professional painter coincided with his move to a rural part of Central California – an area affording the rustic subjects that would become his hallmark.

Zantman Galleries is proud to exhibit the exceptional art of Robert Clark.
