Robert Clark Biography

(1920-1997)

Robert Clark exhibited his work in Zantman Art Galleries since the gallery began in 1959. He is best known for his magnificent realistic renditions of the rural American scene. Working in the rare and demanding medium of egg tempera has assured him his prominent place among American artists.

Born in Minnesota in 1920 he received his formal art training at the Walker Art School and the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He came to California in 1948 where he became a staff member of the Long Beach Museum of Art and later a staff artist at the Los Angeles County Museum, leaving that position to become an independent painter. He moved to a rural part of Central California to paint the rustic subjects that would become his hallmark. He has been compared to Andrew Wyeth.

His exquisitely subtle, sometimes moody, and always dramatic paintings have been sought after by prominent collectors from all over the world.  Among the collectors of Clark’s paintings are such notables as the late Johnny Carson, Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck.
