Duane Alt Biography

Zantman Art Galleries has been proudly presenting Duane Alt’s beautiful paintings for over 35 years.

Duane Alt came upon his fascination with and ultimate mastery of Impressionism in a somewhat indirect way. He was born in Nebraska in 1935 and raised in Southern California. During his high school years, he worked after school mixing paints for the scenery painters at the Hollywood film studios. While still a teenager, he began his formal art studies at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, and in the 1960s he studied art at the Sorbonne, and the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. It was there that the impact of the French Impressionists, particularly Monet, captured his heart and influenced his personal style.

His favorite locales to paint range from the French Riviera of Southern France to the charming village of Portofino, Northern Italy. The dazzling sunshine, colorful fields of flowers, architecture, and everyday village life gave him bountiful inspiration.

Alt has the great distinction of being the first ever American artist to be invited to participate in the illustrious “Le Salon 93" Sociéty des Artistes Francais Grand Palais des Champs-Elysées-Paris.  This invitation shattered a 300 year tradition excluding non-French participation which had been held since the time of Louis XIV.  A French jury selected three of Alt’s paintings for “Le Salon 93” exhibit.  His paintings continue to be sought after and are in many notable collections around the world, ranging from Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco, to local celebrity Doris Day.
