Biography:

David Jenks

David Jenks grew up in Massachusetts, graduating from Williams College with an Art History degree in 1965. He also attended the Yale Summer School of Music and Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

He particularly admires the previous turn-of-the-century artists John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, and Anders Zorn. They painted the light and were masters of gesture in their brushwork. Their art still sets a standard for portrait and figure painting.

For many years he was a dedicated plein air painter—in the desert southwest, the coast of Maine and the Mendocino coast of northern California, where he has lived for the last 20 years. As he became increasingly drawn to the more transitory effects of light and sea and sky, he now captures uniquely special moments which must ultimately be realized in the studio. Therefore in his oils he utilizes a traditional realist style to convey his contemporary version of the seascape genre.

“I believe the ability of a work of art to uplift our spirits is its greatest attribute.  If it can inspire and transport the viewer to another level beyond the physical or the visual, then it has accomplished something which transcends the human act of its creation.”
